Why 2021 Will be the End of the Fast Fashion Industry

The fast fashion industry, including brands such as Zara, H&M, and Forever 21, have created a new culture of shopping that is cheap on the wallet but detrimental to the environment.

It has not only caused harm to the environment, but to humanity and the consumerist culture. However, as 2021 becomes more prominent, the fast fashion industry is becoming less prominent as slow fashion brands begin to steal the spotlight (and rightfully so!).

What is Fast Fashion?

Fast fashion comprises clothing, shoes, and accessoires that are cheaply made and priced. Sourced from unethical resources and ignorant structures, there is no thought in how apparel is made.

Fast fashion is inspired by the latest catwalk trends and pumped into stores in a systematic way to maximize on current styles. It is common to see a full sales section in any fast fashion section, used to get rid of the previous season at an absurdly cheap price.

The fast fashion industry promotes a fear of missing out on consumers, who buy new clothing every season, only to discard of it in a couple of months. Furthermore, clothing is not made to last, so consumers find themselves buying the same jeans or shirt multiple times a year.

The Damaging Impact of the Fast Fashion Industry

Have you ever wondered who is making your clothing? Where it is fabricated or where the resources come from?

The clothing you buy from brands in the fast fashion industry affect both the environment and humanity. It is the second biggest polluter in the world, after oil.

Consumers now purchase 80 billion new pieces of clothing a year. That is 400% more than just twenty years ago.

Furthermore, fast fashion doesn’t account for the 80% of young women working in factories and fabricating an insanely high demand for fabric and apparel.

Between the age of eighteen to twenty-four, many of these young women and other workers are underpaid and neglected of safe working conditions.

Businesses Are Moving Away From the Fast Fashion Industry

Slow fashion is becoming more and more prominent in the fashion industry. As consumers see the reality of the fast fashion industry, they are demanding sustainable practices from their favourite brands.

There are high fashion brands such as Stella McCartney that are built on sustainable fashion as well as other amazing brands like Margaret M's slimming pants, Reformation, and Patagonia.

More and more brands are coming out stating their mission to become greener and more ethical within the next decade. We have seen it with H&M, Zara, and more.

Though consumers must watch out for greenwashing, these new sustainable efforts would not have been possible without the persistent demand from consumers for a change.

Our Mission at Margaret M

We produce all of our garments in Canada, because we love celebrating locally! We also feel better knowing that our pieces meet all Canadian healthy and safety standards; that our slimming pants have travelled less and have made a smaller carbon footprint, and that the people who manufacture our clothes are well-treated and enjoy good work conditions.
